Indiana Commercial Truck Insurance Quotes

Last reviewed August 2026 by the Trucking Insurance Services team.

Indiana is the Crossroads of America, and it earns the name. Freight moves through this state in every direction, the warehouses keep filling, and a lot of good trucking companies get started here because it is a sensible place to run from. Indiana truck insurance should be the easy part of that, and with us it is: we write commercial trucking and nothing else, we put carriers in competition for your business, and most quotes go out the same day.

We write a lot of Indiana business and we like Indiana truckers. Whether you are pulling a flatbed out of a plant, running dry van long haul, or working local with a dump truck, we can quote it.

What you get from us in Indiana

  • Your quote: same day in most cases, shopped across multiple carriers, not one.
  • Your markets: strong, financially sound carriers, including markets rated as high as A++.
  • Your cost: real numbers by operation, in the table below.
  • Your filings: the BMC-91 on your MC number when you run interstate, handled for you.

Starting a new trucking authority in Indiana

Indiana is a good place to start a trucking company. The freight is here, the corridors are here, and the insurance market here is deep enough that a brand new authority has real options instead of one take-it-or-leave-it quote.

More than one of the carriers we work with actively wants first-year Indiana business rather than merely tolerating it. We quote new ventures across several markets the same day, and we walk you through what you are actually looking at before you sign: which limits your brokers will demand, what your down payment does to your monthly, and what changes at your first renewal once you have twelve months of your own history. If you are still working through authority itself, start with how to get your MC and DOT numbers and new venture truck insurance.

Why Indiana truckers put us to work

Our founder, Eva Clair Bowles, drove a truck before she sold insurance. She owned the tractor and the trailer and ran the loads, and she opened this agency in 2007 to be the agency she wished she’d had when she started. That is still how we hire and how we think.

  • Carriers compete for you. Indiana is a deep market, and we make the carriers that want it bid against each other.
  • Certificates in minutes. A late certificate costs you a load. Ours do not run on a ticket queue.
  • The same agent, every time. Not a call center, and not a new voice at renewal.
  • We quote every Indiana operation. Single owner-operator or a growing fleet, we will look at it.

What Indiana truck insurance costs

These are the ranges we place for a single truck, by operation. Where you land inside a range depends far more on your record, your radius and your driver history than on the truck itself.

Indiana commercial truck insurance cost by operation, single truck
Operation Typical cost
Semi truck, dry van or flatbed $665 to $1,415/mo ($8,000 to $17,000/yr)
Reefer $835 to $1,500/mo ($10,000 to $18,000/yr)
Box truck $540 to $1,250/mo ($6,500 to $15,000/yr)
Dump truck $1,000 to $1,500/mo ($12,000 to $18,000/yr)

Ranges reflect policies we write. Physical damage is priced as a percentage of what your equipment is worth, generally 3% to 12% of the truck and trailer value, so a newer tractor moves the whole number. For what cargo limits cost on their own, see our cargo insurance cost guide.

What influences your Indiana rate

Most of what moves your premium is inside your control, and knowing which levers matter is half of shopping it well.

  • Driver records and CDL experience. The fastest lever you have, and the first thing an underwriter looks at.
  • DOT safety scores and inspection history. Underwriters see inspections within days now, not months, and brake and tire violations move renewals.
  • Time under authority. Year one prices differently from year three. That is temporary, and it improves on its own.
  • Radius and lanes. Regional Indiana running prices differently from coast-to-coast long haul, even with the same truck.
  • What you pull. Flatbed securement, refrigerated commodities and dump work each carry their own claim patterns, and carriers price them differently.
  • Equipment value and deductibles. Physical damage follows the value of the truck, and the deductible you choose is a real lever on the monthly.

What Indiana requires you to carry

If you run interstate

You are under FMCSA rules and your insurer files the BMC-91 against your MC number. The federal floor and what your brokers will actually accept are two different numbers, and that gap is what catches new authorities out.

Federal minimum vs what gets you hired
Coverage Federal minimum What brokers actually require
Auto liability, general freight $750,000 $1,000,000
Motor truck cargo Not set federally for general freight $100,000

If you run Indiana only

Here is the part that surprises people who have run in other states: Indiana does not make general freight carriers apply for intrastate operating authority. Under Indiana Code 8-2.1-22, the Indiana Department of Revenue requires a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity only from carriers hauling household goods or passengers. If you pull a van, a flatbed, a reefer or a dump trailer for hire inside Indiana, that authority process does not apply to you.

Practically, that means there is no Form E for a for-hire semi in Indiana. The filing you will need is the BMC-91, and only once you start running out of state. Compare that with a state like Pennsylvania truck insurance, where every intrastate operation has to register with the state and file two forms, and you can see why Indiana is an easier place to get moving.

You still register for the things every Indiana carrier registers for: your USDOT number, UCR, and, through Indiana DOR Motor Carrier Services, your IRP plates and fuel tax. We will tell you which of those actually apply to your operation before you spend a dollar.

Built for how Indiana actually trucks

Indiana runs a lot of manufacturing, and manufacturing makes flatbed and dry van freight. Add the warehousing and the interstate corridors crossing the state and you get a book that leans long haul, with plenty of local and regional work underneath it. That is roughly what our Indiana book looks like.

  • Long haul and over the road. The backbone of Indiana trucking. See commercial truck insurance.
  • Flatbed. Steel, building materials and machinery out of the plants, where securement drives the cargo conversation.
  • Dry van. Warehouse to warehouse, regional and long haul, the most common thing we quote here.
  • Reefer. Temperature controlled freight and breakdown coverage. See reefer truck insurance.
  • Box trucks. CDL and non-CDL straight trucks on regional work. See box truck insurance.
  • Dump trucks. Aggregate and construction work, priced on job site exposure. See dump truck insurance.

Owner-operators leased to a carrier need a different structure, usually non-trucking liability rather than primary. If that is you, start with owner operator insurance. Running your own authority and hauling direct for shippers usually means adding general liability, and containers out of the intermodal ramps mean intermodal insurance.

A deep market only helps if somebody works it

Indiana is one of the easier states in the country to get a truck insured in. That is good news, and it comes with a catch: when a lot of carriers are willing to write your operation, the spread between the best quote and the worst one gets wider, not narrower. We have seen the same Indiana truck come back thousands of dollars apart depending on who looked at it.

That gap is the whole reason to use an agency that does nothing but trucking. We know which markets want long haul out of Indiana, which ones price flatbed and dry van sensibly, which ones will genuinely look at a first-year authority, and which ones will quote it high just to say no politely. Bring us a number that came back too high somewhere else and let us find out who actually wants the work.

Which carriers compete for Indiana truckers?

Indiana is a deep market, which is exactly what you want when you are shopping. These are markets that write Indiana well. Appetite shifts, so treat this as the shape of the market rather than a promise about your account.

Indiana truck insurance FAQs

How much is commercial truck insurance in Indiana?

For a single truck, most Indiana policies we write land between $6,500 and $18,000 a year, which is roughly $540 to $1,500 a month. Box truck work sits at the lower end and dump and reefer at the higher end. The table above breaks it out by operation, and a quote will give you your actual number in about a day.

Do I need a Form E in Indiana?

Not for a for-hire semi hauling general freight. Indiana only requires intrastate operating authority, and the filing that goes with it, from household goods and passenger carriers. If you are running general freight and you cross a state line, the filing you need is the BMC-91 on your MC number. We handle it.

Can I get insured on a brand new authority in Indiana?

Yes, and Indiana is one of the better states to do it in. Several of the carriers we work with write first-year Indiana authorities on purpose. Expect to pay more in year one than in year three, and expect that to improve as you build your own loss history. Call us and we will quote it across multiple markets the same day.

Is Indiana a big trucking state?

Very much so. Indiana calls itself the Crossroads of America because so many interstate corridors meet here, and the warehousing and manufacturing that follow generate a great deal of freight. That is good news when you are buying insurance: a lot of carriers want Indiana business, which means real competition for your policy instead of a single quote.

How much cargo insurance do I need in Indiana?

Brokers and shippers in Indiana generally want $100,000 in motor truck cargo, and some commodities need more. Flatbed and refrigerated loads in particular can push that higher depending on what you are hauling. We build to what your customers require, not to a minimum.

How do I find the cheapest commercial truck insurance in Indiana?

By having it shopped properly rather than by buying the thinnest policy. Indiana is a competitive market, and the same operation can come back thousands of dollars apart between carriers because each one weighs radius, equipment and driver history differently. That gap is the opportunity. Let us run yours and find out who wants it most.

Insuring truckers across Indiana

We write Indiana trucking statewide, from Indianapolis and the warehousing that rings it through Fort Wayne, South Bend, Evansville and the smaller towns along the corridors in between. You do not need an agency down the road from you. You need one licensed where you run that does nothing but trucking, and that answers the phone. If you are weighing your options, here is our guide to choosing a trucking insurance agency. For the federal side, see FMCSA insurance requirements and how much insurance you need to activate an MC number.

Indiana freight crosses state lines constantly, and we write the neighbors too, so the same agent handles it when your lanes leave the state: Illinois truck insurance, Michigan truck insurance, Ohio truck insurance, and Kentucky truck insurance.
