UIIA Insurance Requirements: What You Need To Know
As a trucking companies operating in the intermodal transportation space, understanding the Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement (UIIA) insurance requirements is crucial. UIIA sets standards for the interchange of intermodal equipment for motor carriers in addition to ocean carriers, railroads, and more.
What Insurance Coverage Do I Need?
You need to understand that there are UIIA insurance requirements and equipment provider (EP) insurance requirements. You must meet both requirements.
Your intermodal truck insurance policy must include the below coverage and endorsements:
- Auto Liability
- General Liability
- Motor Truck Cargo
- Trailer Interchange
- Workers Compensation and Employers Liability
- Truckers UIIA Endorsement (UIIE-1)
Auto Liability
UIIA requires $1,000,000 Auto Liability covering Any Auto or Hired Auto Liability, Non Owned Auto Liability, and Scheduled Auto Liability. While the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates intermodal truckers to carry $750,000 for their authority, UIIA requires a minimum of $1,000,000.
General Liability
You must maintain $1,000,000/$2,000,000 General Liability coverage that provides Truckers and Intermodal coverage. Many equipment providers require an additional insured endorsement on the General Liability coverage which is not standard on policies. Ask your insurance agent if your General Liability policy covers intermodal exposure and offers UIIA additional insured endorsements.
Motor Truck Cargo
The majority of equipment providers require $100,000 Motor Truck Cargo. Certain equipment providers, such as Sarjack Container Line, require $250,000 motor truck cargo insurance. In addition, equipment providers may require Reefer Breakdown coverage.
Trailer Interchange
UIIA mandates trailer interchange insurance to cover the chassis. While the majority of equipment providers require a $25,000 trailer interchange limit or less, others such as Hapag-Lloyd, Innovative Terminal, ISO Tank Chassis, Milestone, and TS Lines require higher limits. The highest limit at the time of writing is $42,000 for Milestone. We recommend $30,000 Trailer Interchange for intermodal operations.
Workers Compensation and Employers Liability
A small handful of equipment providers require Workers Compensation and/or Employers Liability. Most intermodal truckers are not required to purchase coverage to haul UIIA. However, it’s essential to check with each equipment provider you want to get setup with.
Truckers UIIA Endorsement (UIIE-1)
The Truckers Uniform Intermodal Interchange Endorsement is a hold harmless endorsement that is included in Auto Liability coverage. To put it simply, the UIIE-1 outlines your insurance company’s duties arising from accidents involving intermodal equipment. In addition, it adds the equipment provider as an additional insured.
What Is The UIIA Equipment Provider 5C?
The 5C is an equipment provider list from the UIIA. Intermodal truckers are required to list the equipment providers they intend to do business with under the UIIA agreement. Insurance companies require this to know which equipment providers need the additional insured endorsement.
